Last night I participated in my first murder mystery party. (It is actually my second, but I do not even remember the first, so I’m not counting that one). It was a pirate themed party, and the idea was so cool!
Everyone arrived in costume according to their character. I was Calico John Rakem, a clumsy romantic pirate and the creator of the Jolly Roger flag.
The game was divided into three rounds – in the first round, we were given clues and talking points. We mingled over appetizers and drinks and learned about the other characters.
We then sat down for dinner and received our second set of clues, where we started accusing each other of different offenses – and started for form our ideas of who the murderer might be. I found this round to be the hardest – I was awful at talking in character! I stuck to my talking points, but I just used my regular voice. Other pirates had great accents though!
At the end of that round, there was a scream, and a pirate was discovered dead! My grandfather came out with white face paint on, he was a ghost from that point on and could not talk (although he did let out the occasional ARRRRRR anyways). We went through our last set of clues and took guesses at who the murderer was. The last portion consisted of each pirate stating if they were the murderer or not. The murderer obviously would have to go last, however we got mixed up and our murderer revealed herself towards the beginning. We still went through and read our cards though.
The whole even was a wonderful time. The food was great (and cleverly named), the costumes were fabulously done and the company (extended family) was wonderful as always. Ahoy mateys!
